WIN'S TIPS & EXPERT ADVICE FOR DIAMOND BUYERS

Important - To those purchasing a diamond for engagement purposes. The diamond represents approximately 90% of the cost of a diamond engagement ring.

diamond_box.jpg
We recommend you consider purchasing the diamond only. The diamond will be delivered to you mounted in a temporary ring setting and presented in a beautiful wooden ring box

This temporary setting is to be used for presentation so she can view the diamond on her finger (it is not suitable or safe to be worn).

Women place great emphasis on the ring’s style. Therefore we recommend you purchase the ring locally as this is both romantic and enjoyable. This process gives your fiancée the opportunity to have personal input to the ring she will be wearing and enhance her engagement experience. However, if you know the style of ring she wants we can provide it for you and have it made in our workshops. We are happy to design and hand make rings in platinum, 18K white and yellow gold or 9K gold.

Educate yourself before you make your purchase. This can be achieved by reading appropriate material, talking to trusted and knowledgeable retailers, using the internet, and reading this advice page!

Insist on a third party diamond grading
certificate. The Diamond Shop provides certificates from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and AGS (American Gem Society) and we also use local grading laboratories.

There are different grades of diamonds and each grade directly affects the value. The price you will pay for a diamond depends on its grade related to the
4 Cs. The fifth C relates to the Certificate
as per the above information.

Focusing on only one C is not the way to buy a diamond. You can buy a one carat diamond for a few hundred dollars if you ignore
colour, clarity and cut. The best thing to do is find a balance.

It is my experience that untrained buyers tend to focus on the diamonds clarity, as it is easily understood. We recommend clarity grades not higher than VS1 and not lower than SI2. The reason is that within this range you achieve best value for money as this clarity range will not affect the diamond's brilliance. Clarity grading of VVS and higher command substantial price increases without an increase in perceptible brilliance. However The Diamond Shop are happy to supply any diamond grade you require.

The diamond’s cut is much more important in producing a beautiful diamond than its clarity. An AGS certified
Ideal Cut diamond or a GIA certified Excellent Cut diamond is worth the extra expense as it will assure the buyer of a beautiful brilliant gem stone.

Diamonds are imported into New Zealand duty free. We can assist overseas travellers who purchase diamond jewellery from us to collect these purchases from the airport as they leave New Zealand, thus making their purchase tax-free (i.e. GST exempt). This makes New Zealand an economical place to purchase diamond jewellery plus you have the backing of our company.

You are welcome to call us toll free on 0800 888 757 or visit us at our Auckland shop-open 7 days.

Diamonds have consistently increased in value over the past 20 years due to the tightly controlled world market. There are very few investments you can make that:

1. Consistently appreciate in value.
2. Can be worn and enjoyed each and every day.
3. Have an international value.
4. Can be passed on to loved ones with wonderful memories of the giver.
5. Represent the highest expression of love, glamour, elegance, wealth, romance and refinement.

And that is why, my friends, “A diamond is indeed a girl’s best friend.”
