How to Buy Tahitian Black Pearls

The price you will pay is determined by the following considerations

Size

Bigger is not always better, but with pearls bigger means more expensive. Sizes range from 8mm to 17mm and larger sizes (13mm plus) are rare and prices will reflect this.

Orient & Lustre

Orient is the pearl's play of light in depth by splitting the light through anagonite crystals. The lustre is the reflection of the light on the surface of the pearl, and together they create the shine and brilliancy of the pearl.

Colour

The palette of this amazing gem is very broad with multiple hues and tones from silver white, peacock green, rainbow tints, blue, pink, golden and on and on. Peacock colours tend to bring the highest prices but the main criteria of value remains with the buyer's personal taste.

Shape

The different shapes represented include round, semi-round, drop, baroque, circled and button. Again, taste is of prime importance to the buyer, pear and round shapes are the most popular. Perfect rounds are the rarest and their prices are the highest.

From the black lipped oyster pinctada margaritifera, one of nature's most beautiful natural treasures is born.

Surprisingly, most colours of black pearls are not black, but echo the rainbow colours of their home...the breathtaking hues and tones of the South Pacific lagoons.

You are very fortunate, as these treasures are now affordable. Therefore it is understandable they are finding their way into jewellery collections around the world.
